A common question we get from customers is can we just install the new roof over the existing one. The thought is that it will save time and money for the customer. However, it’s not recommend to install materials over shingles. Doing so does not allow for a proper inspection of the wood deck to ensure that the new roof is being installed over a sound structure. Roofing materials are extremely heavy, and building on a structure that cannot support the weight of the materials can be dangerous. The additional issue is that if you have a weak roof structure with issues such as rotting or water damage, installing a new roof over the existing one will not solve those problems. In fact the additional weight could make matters worse. With all that said, roofing over a previously installed roof can be considered under certain circumstances, usually with flat roof systems, but it’s best to check with a roofing professional for the best solution.
